What Cummins fault codes mean on an ISX15 or X15
A Cummins fault code is a 3- or 4-digit number the engine ECM stores when a sensor or system falls outside its normal range. Every Cummins code maps to a standard J1939 SPN/FMI pair, so fault code 3712 and SPN 5246 FMI 0 are the same event seen two ways. The lamp that comes on with the code tells you how urgent it is: amber means finish the run and get it checked, red means stop as soon as it is safe.
Cummins codes vs SPN/FMI: two names for one fault
Cummins uses its own short numbers because the ISX family predates J1939. Service tools like INSITE show both. The dash usually shows the SPN and FMI, the standard the truck builder uses.
- Fault code is the Cummins number, for example 3712 or 1922.
- SPN (Suspect Parameter Number) names the sensor or system; 3251 is DPF differential pressure.
- FMI (Failure Mode Identifier) says what went wrong: 0 too high, 1 too low, 3 and 4 wiring, 31 "condition exists".
Verified pairs: fault code 3712 is SPN 5246 FMI 0, 1922 is SPN 3251 FMI 0, 3868 is SPN 3364 FMI 9, and 3714 is SPN 1569 FMI 31.

Lamp logic: amber, red and the MIL
Cummins uses three engine lamps, and they can light together.
- Check Engine (amber): service soon. You can usually finish the shift. If it flashes for 30 seconds at key-on, maintenance is due, not a fault.
- MIL (amber engine outline): an emissions-related fault. Ignore it long enough and the ECM starts a derate.
- Stop Engine (red): stop as soon as it is safe. If it flashes, you have about 30 seconds before the engine shuts itself down when Engine Protection Shutdown is enabled.
Read the code before deciding, not just the color. See /guides/check-engine-light-colors-trucks.
The most common code families on ISX15 and X15
DEF and SCR (fault code 3712, SPN 5246 FMI 0). This is the SCR operator inducement code. It does not point to a broken part. It means another SCR fault (empty DEF tank, bad DEF quality, NOx sensor, DEF pump or doser) has been active long enough to trigger a speed limit. Historically the final step was 5 mph (8 km/h). Software updates rolled out from 2026 raise that limit to 25 mph (40 km/h) on updated engines. Fault code 3868 (SPN 3364 FMI 9) is DEF quality: watered-down or wrong fluid, or a dirty sensor.
DPF soot load (fault code 1922, SPN 3251 FMI 0). Differential pressure across the DPF is very high. The filter is loaded or face-plugged. A flashing DPF lamp plus check engine means power is already being cut. Read /guides/dpf-regeneration-guide before forcing a regen.
NOx sensors. Inlet and outlet NOx sensors fail often, typically between 150,000 and 400,000 miles. A bad sensor sets its own code first, then feeds the SCR efficiency and inducement codes above.
EGR differential pressure. The EGR delta-P sensor tube sooting up is a classic ISX issue. Codes show as erratic or out-of-range EGR flow. The truck usually runs fine but may set a MIL.
Boost and turbo actuator. The VGT actuator sets position and calibration codes when it sticks or loses communication. Symptoms are low power up grades and black smoke. Boost lower than expected reads as SPN 102 FMI 18.
Coolant temperature (fault code 151, SPN 110 FMI 0) and oil pressure (fault code 415, SPN 100 FMI 1). These are engine protection codes. Both bring the red lamp and a torque derate (fault code 3714, SPN 1569 FMI 31) and both can shut the engine down.
Keep driving or stop
- Keep driving, fix soon: single amber lamp with an EGR, NOx sensor or DEF quality code and no power loss.
- Caution, shop today: amber plus DPF lamp, or a DEF lamp with mild power loss. The inducement clock is running.
- Stop now: red lamp with coolant temp or oil pressure, or a flashing red lamp. Shut down before the ECM does it for you.
How to read the codes
- Note the lamp colors and whether anything flashes. Photograph the cluster with the fault screen showing.
- Scroll the driver display. Most trucks with ISX or X15 show the active SPN and FMI in the message center. Older trucks with a Cummins RoadRelay show the Cummins fault code directly.
- Run the photo through DERATE, an iPhone app that reads a picture of the dash lamps or a scanner screen and gives a free keep-driving, caution or stop verdict. The detailed causes, steps and cost estimate come with a plan.
- With a red lamp or an inducement countdown, get to a shop with INSITE or a dealer-level tool. Only those see the root fault behind 3712 and reset the inducement after repair.
Costs vary by shop and region. A NOx sensor is about 400 to 900 dollars installed. A DEF doser is typically 600 to 1,200 dollars. A DPF clean runs about 300 to 600 dollars.
FAQ
Can I clear a Cummins code 3712 myself and keep going?
Clearing it does not fix the SCR fault underneath, and the inducement timer picks up where it left off. Find the root code first.
Why does my dash show SPN 5246 but the shop says fault code 3712?
Same fault. The dash speaks J1939 SPN/FMI, the Cummins tool speaks Cummins fault codes. Either number works when you call for parts.
Does the amber check engine lamp mean a derate is coming?
Not by itself. An amber lamp with an emissions code turns into a derate if ignored for hours or days, depending on the fault. Check the code the same day.
